According to the latest Staffing Industry Analysts Pulse Survey, year-over-year revenue growth in temporary staffing was at a median 7%. Healthcare, however, led the way in growth in August with the top three segments being travel nurse staffing at 20%, allied healthcare at 10% and locum tenens at 9%.
The healthcare staffing market is projected to grow 4% to $18.1 billion in 2020, according to SIA's most recent US Staffing Industry Forecast. The projected growth is being attributed to continued economic expansion and an increase national health expenditures.
Furthermore, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated employment projections for 2018 to 2028 revealing that overall US employment is projected to grow by 5.2%, or 8.4 million jobs. The healthcare and social assistance sector is expected to make up 40%, or 3.4 million, of the overall increase.
Within the healthcare sector, the BLS has made the following occupational growth projections from 2018-2028:
- Home health aides (37%)
- Personal care aides (36%)
- Occupational therapy assistants (33%)
- Physician assistants (31%),
- Nurse practitioners (28%)
- Speech language pathologists (27%)
- Physical therapists (22%)
- Registered nurses (12%)
- Physicians and surgeons (7%)
